I am in total awe of the work this group has produced. It was not until I started reviewing two LP’s I have obtained that I was introduced to them. I am posting the LP’s on Ebay but now I must record some of the music before I do. Here is a great description I found by a blogger who is passionate about vintage gospel music.

This is the description about the Record “Beauty for Ashes” by the Living Sacrifice Band.

Here is the back of the LP

We also found out about another LP released by The Living Sacrifice Band called Called to Brokeness. Here is the description from the Heavenly Grooves Blog. Read it very insightful.

So both of them are for sale but even after the sale is over please go the the Heavenly Grooves Website to stay current on some of the vintage gospel music that will bring back memories.

Baby Boomer Music- James Taylor

Ok, I am going to be very honest with you. Ray and I are reviewing an assortment of music we have acquired or have in our inventory. Some of the LP’s we are posting on Ebay others we are giving away. But oh, we are having fun reliving some of it and discovering others.

I know some of  the music of James Taylor. Some of his popular hits I have heard, loved but, unlike my artist hubby, did not connect with the singer. I know unbelievable isn’t it? So far we are posting, several of his popular LP’s like, “Sweet Baby James” and his “Greatest Hits” which hubby already had on CD.

Well, the goal is to convert some of these great LP’s into CD’s. That way I can remember, enjoy and learn about so many artists that I may not have taken the time to learn about in my earlier years. I guess that is one of the great things about being a babyboomer, learning, learning and enjoying!

Now I know this cut and love the voice of this great singing artist. Enjoy You’ve Got a Friend, by Carole King and sung by James Taylor.

Also, read about the life, early career, breakthroughs and some current activities of this great artist, James Taylor

Oh, and here is how my copy sounds of “The Greatest Hits”

Baby Boomer Music-Leon Patillo

Baby boomer musician and minister Leon Patillo has exceptionally inspiring music. Read this short bio sketch below from Wikipedia:

Leon Patillo (born January 1, 1947) is an American CCM musician.

Patillo’s first musical endeavor was with the group Creation, later called Leon’s Creation. Formed in the late 1960s, Creation was a funk group similar in style and composition to Sly & the Family Stone; they were signed to Atlantic Records. Aside from Creation, Patillo worked at times with Funkadelic and Martha & the Vandellas. In 1973, Patillo joined Santana, appearing on the albums Borboletta and Festival. He remained with Santana until 1981, launching a solo career on Word Records. He released a string of successful albums on the CCM market in the 1980s, and had his own television show on TBN called Leon and Friends.

Patillo founded his own record label, Positive Pop, in the 1990s, and his most recent releases have been on this imprint. Patillo also leads his own ministry.

Listen to some of his music now!

Baby Boomer Music-Bluegrass Gospel by The Downings

Posted by Rosie on April 13, 2010

This entry is part 2 of 6 in the series baby boomer music

The Gospel singing group called The Downings recorded a lot of great gospel songs. Here is a short history I found on a site called Southern Gospel History.

The Southern Gospel group, the Downings, were a mixed quartet founded by the husband and wife team of Paul Downing and Ann Downing. Other founding members were Greg Gordon?, Sue Dodge? (Sue Chenault), and pianist Dickie Matthews?.

The group went through several personnel changes throughout the early to mid 1970s, and eventually disbanded in 1977. The group released 18 albums in 8 years. Ann and Paul were voted favorite female singer and favorite bass singer respectively in 1973 in the Singing News Fan Awards.

Paul and Ann were in the process of trying to reform the Downings when Paul passed away in 1992.

So enjoy one of their songs.

Boomer Time Music-Remember The Servant Band?

Posted by Rosie on April 11, 2010

Ray and I are reviewing and listening to some baby boomer time music from various genres. Well, thought we would share some known and unknown LP’s. Some will be from our private collection and some will be from other folks. Yes, we admit some of the records we are attempting to record to CD.

But some of these records have an awesome history. Ok. lets look at a group called the Servants.  The album we checked out is Shallow Waters. This is a LP on the original label. If you want a copy just click on the Ebay button on the site. However, if you are reading this post months or years from now still check it out on Ebay or Amazon.

This type of music has received some criticism. It is progressive and full of social commentary.  I found a cut on You Tube for you to check it out for yourself. This cut is called “Holy Roller Blues”.

Here is a bit of history from Wikipedia.

Servant was a Christian rock group  that grew out of the counter-culture Jesus Movement of the sixties and seventies. The band was founded in Victoria, British Columbia in 1976 and performed to audiences throughout North America, Europe and Australia  for over 12 years. Originally named “Higher Ground”, the group quickly changed their name to Servant. They were known for challenging the Christian  church to turn back to social justice and caring for the poor.

A Servant rock concert was like a festival event. The band was known to incorporate comedy and short skits in their sets on stage. Servant was also the first Christian rock group to use laser lights, flame tubes, fireworks, fog machines, in addition to an extensive light show and quadraphonic sound (a precursor to surround-sound).

In the early 1980s some critics considered Servant’s theatrics, light shows, smoke-bombs and flash-pot stage performances too raucous to be authentically Christian. However, the band’s mission was to reach the ears and hearts of those who might not feel so comfortable in church buildings. Shying away from self-centered Jesus-and-me praise lyrics and easy-listening rock styles that typified most contemporary Christian music, Servant instead attempted to offer edgy, rhythmic, passionate rock and an aggressive stage performance filled with a kingdom message, and spiced with strong social commentaries.

A CCM Magazine review of their 1981 release, Rockin Revival, stated that the band’s lyrics reflected Christian communal subculture, and contained elements of social protest and criticism.[1]

Servant toured extensively throughout America, Europe and Australia in concert halls and at music festivals like “Creation” and “Greenbelt”. They recorded 6 studio albums with songs that ranked in the Top 40 Contemporary Christian Music Charts including “Come Jesus Come”, “Holding on to You”, “Thank God”, “We are the Light”, “Surrender”, “Harder to Finish”, and “I Will.”

From 1981 to 1985, opening acts for Servant included Grammy Award winning Petra, DeGarmo & Key, Joe English (of Paul McCartney & Wings fame), Will McFarlane (recorded with Jackson Browne), Randy Matthews, Jerusalem, and Steve Camp. Petra opened for Servant on tour in late 1981 and early 1982 just as Petra’s breakthrough album, Never Say Die was being released.

Formative Years: Servant has some origins in 1973 from “Lonesome Stone”, a Christian rock musical touring Europe that Jim Palosaari billed as a multi-media production of the Jesus generation portrayed in music, film and drama to rival the likes of the musical Godspell. Lonesome Stone was an outreach of Jesus People Europe, which came out of Jesus People Milwaukee. (Jesus People Milwaukee also formed the basis of what eventually became Jesus People USA in Chicago.) After Jesus People Europe broke up, a year later Palosaari and others formed the Highway Missionary Society based in B.C., Canada, with Servant the primary outreach of the Society, based on the West Coast of North America. In 1984 they were renamed The Servant Community in Cincinnati, Ohio.
